The Advocates: Union Pier and What It Means to Our Region
As introduced in an earlier edition of the Advocates, the South Carolina Ports Authority has proposed the redevelopment of an approximately 70 acre site that is currently used as a cruise ship terminal. The project proposal incorporates green space, historic preservation, commercial use, housing, stormwater management and increased access to our waterfront.

Why does this project matter to the Chamber?
The Chamber advocates tirelessly for the wellbeing of businesses and the communities they operate in. Designed ‘with Charleston in mind’, the Union Pier proposal aims to capture the best parts of our community by combining economic development and livability. When business professionals live, work and spend leisure time in the same area, they have more opportunities to interact and form connections with their neighbors and colleagues. This sense of community can lead to stronger social ties, increased civic participation and a greater sense of belonging.
The other component of this proposal is the financial benefits that would support our region. The sale of Union Pier would provide SC Ports with the financial means to improve operations and remain competitive in our country. Additionally, the proposed transfer fee mechanism would give the City of Charleston a recurring source of revenue to help tackle the ongoing housing crisis. Adequate housing capacity and economic momentum are necessary for thriving business and that is why our organization strongly supports this proposal.

Union Pier Needs Everyone’s Help
Over the last several months, project leads for Union Pier have spent time with the community discussing this project and gaining feedback. Most recently, the City of Charleston Technical Review Committee reviewed the resubmitted PUD on May 30. As the City of Charleston prepares to decide whether to move forward with Union Pier, they must hear why it matters to our businesses. We encourage you to show up and participate in this process by advocating for this project.

Sign up to give public comment at the Planning Commission meeting on June 7, 5:00pm meeting at the Ports Authority Passenger Terminal. We anticipate the project will go to City Council later this summer and we ask to have your support throughout this process.

If you would like to support the project, but aren’t sure what to say, please email dcurry@charlestonchamber.org.
